We invite submissions of unpublished articles to the journal Historia Agraria de América Latina (HAAL) for the dossier Agriculture and Food in Latin America and the Caribbean: History, Practices, and Resistances (16th–21st Centuries). This dossier aims to bring together historical research that analyzes the relationship between agriculture and food as an integrated and changing system over time in Latin America, based on the following question: How has the relationship between agriculture and food in Latin America transformed, and what challenges does it face today?
The goal is to overcome the traditional analytical separation between these two fields and propose a joint perspective that recognizes how agricultural practices are intrinsically linked to long-standing food systems in the Latin American region.
The proposal is grounded in the idea that agri-food systems are historical constructions, deeply shaped by social, economic, cultural, and political processes. From the cultivation of polycultures and the milpa system in the 16th century to the expansion of agro-industrial monocultures in the 20th and 21st centuries, this dossier is interested in moments of continuity, rupture, and resistance that have shaped the trajectory of agriculture and food in the region.
Furthermore, it is considered relevant to connect these themes with contemporary challenges such as food insecurity, loss of food sovereignty, impacts of climate change, displacement of peasant and indigenous communities, and public health crises related to diet. For this reason, we welcome contributions addressing, among others, the following topics:
• History of the milpa system and its socio-historical transformations
• Ancestral agri-food practices and their persistence
• Agroecology and resistances to the agro-industrial model
• History of food, meals and identities
• Agrarian policies and their effects on access to land and food
• Peasant and indigenous knowledge regarding food production and preparation
• Agriculture, food and gender
Articles must be unpublished, based on original research supported by primary sources, and engage with recent academic literature. Theoretical works that make a novel contribution to the fields of agrarian, food, and historical studies will also be considered. Manuscripts must strictly adhere to HAAL’s style guidelines.
