Editorial policy
Peer Review Process
1. The manuscripts submitted to HAAH will be first evaluated by the editorial committee, which can reject or send them to external peer review; this first decision will be informed to the author within a month or less if possible.
2. The editorial committee will designate one of its members as editor responsible for the evaluation of the manuscript, and this editor will be the journal’s interlocutor with the author, the external reviewers and the other editors.
3. The manuscript will be independently evaluated by at least two specialists in a ‘double-blinded’ process, as both the reviewers and the author will remain anonymous. This external evaluation will be carried out by completing the Evaluation Form in no more than three months after the date of submission. The authors may consult via e-mail with the designated editor in charge of their article, and they also may contact the editorial office at: revistahaal@cehal.cl
4. In case of significant discrepancies between the two reviewers’ evaluations, or in case that either be of insufficient quality to support a decision on a manuscript, the editors will ask for a third evaluation by a qualified specialist.
5. The editors will make a decision on a manuscript based on the reviewers’ reports and a report by the designated editor. The decision can be one of the following options:
a) Unconditional acceptance, with only minor revisions
b) Acceptance, pending major revision and substantial changes
c) Revise and resubmit
d) Rejection, no publication.
6. Manuscripts that have been unconditionally accepted–case (a)– will be finalized directly by the author following the designated editor’s indications. Manuscript that have been accepted ‘pending major revision and substantial changes’ –case (b)–should be revised by the author according to the reviewers’ comments and suggestions from the editors. In response to the reviewers, the author should also submit a note explaining the main changes introduced in the new version. These files should be uploaded in the Review Discussion section.
7. The author should submit the revised version within four weeks after receiving the reviewers’ reports. The revised version will be sent to the same reviewers for a second round of evaluations. However, if advisable to ensure the quality, fairness and confidentiality of the evaluation, the editors may send the revised version to a different reviewer.
8. The entire evaluation process of a manuscript will be completed in no more than six months. The author should email the revised version of the article to the editor, who will inform the author about the issue where it will be published. Authors should also provide a short biographical note and their ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), to be obtained from: https://orcid.org/
9. The same procedure previously described will apply to all submissions in dossier and special issues in charge of guest editors.
Section Policies
Articles
Articles submitted to HAAL should be original research findings, demonstrate their contribution to the disciplinary area or debate to which they relate, and should not be under consideration, nor have been published, by another journal. Authors should sign a formal statement indicating that the submitted article is an original work and is not under evaluation elsewhere. HAAL uses standard procedures to check for plagiarism and self-plagiarism; if detected, either will be cause for immediate rejection of the submission. HAAL does not accept translations of articles that have already been published. The author should inform HAAL if the submission is similar to an article she/he published in another journal.
Special Issues
HAAL also publishes thematic special issues on topics selected by the editors or according to proposals from specialists who wish to manage a special issue as guest editors. The editors will evaluate proposals for special issues considering their potential contribution to the field, the quality of the proposed articles, and the guest editors and participant authors’ record of publications. Submissions for special issues are subject to the same norms and procedures as those for regular issues.
Book Reviews
HAAL publishes reviews of relevant books in the journal’s areas of interest that have been published in the last four years. The book reviews will be written by specialists upon a formal request by the journal, and they should offer a critical assessment of the reviewed work’s contributions. Publishers and authors are welcome to send books for review to the journal’s editorial office.
Ethical Rules
Good Practice Guidelines
Historia Agraria de América Latina (HAAL) adheres to the following editorial guidelines:
1. The Editors, the members of the Editorial Advisory Board, and the Editorial Production Team will observe absolute confidentiality with regards to authors and reviewers’ both personal and professional information, as well as regarding every step of the evaluation of manuscripts submitted to the Journal.
2. The evaluation and revision of manuscripts submitted to HAAL will be conducted in a rigorous and professional manner. Authors will be responsible for compliance with the requirement of submitting only original works that have not been published previously, are not under evaluation by, or will not be submitted to, another journal while under consideration at HAAL. To this effect, authors should fill out and sign a Statement of Originality and Consent, and send it along with their submission. Consequently, authors will solely be responsible for any property rights conflict regarding their manuscripts’ textual and graphic contents.
3. Authors should clearly and precisely indicate the sources they used in their submission, and they should also acknowledge the use of any ideas, arguments, methods, approaches, and evidence borrowed or taken from another scholar’s work.
4. The external reviewers will evaluate the manuscript within the assigned time frame, working independently and under a ‘double-blinded’ process, and they will write a report assessing the manuscript. Likewise, the reviewers should inform the editors if they identified the manuscript’s author or have any conflict of interest, in which case they will decline the invitation to evaluate. Reviewers should also report to the editors any circumstances that compromise the manuscript’s originality, such plagiarism and self-plagiarism.
5. In case of any conflict of interest, it will be settled by members of the editorial committee, whose decisions regarding a manuscript will be final. The editor in charge of supervising the evaluation of a manuscript will inform the author(s) of such decisions.

To ensure the originality, transparency and unpublished quality of the articles, HAAL uses the tools iParadigms and iThenticate to verify any type of plagiarism, thus complementing the Declaration of Originality that must be attached to each submission. In case of plagiarism, the Editorial Committee will immediately reject the submission, informing the reasons to the author.
