Published since 2020 by the Centro de Estudios de Historia Agraria de América Latina (CEHAL), HAAL’s editorial perspective is informed by a comprehensive understanding of agrarian history, as an interdisciplinary and diverse field of research. It publishes work on a wide range of topics, from technical and economic issues to cultural representations of ‘the countryside’. The journal seeks not only to increase understanding of the rural past, but to reflect on the societies in which we live. The journal also brings together agrarian historiographies of Latin America and the Caribbean. Beyond their empirical contents and comparative interest, we hope that the articles published in the journal will be recognised for the ideas and methodological strategies they provide, which may in turn be used to advance research on the agrarian history of other countries, regions and places. To facilitate this encounter between the different historiographies of the region, the journal publishes articles and book reviews in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Furthermore, the journal promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and welcomes research from the fields of economics, anthropology, political science, sociology, cultural studies, among others, which examine questions of rural society from an historical perspective.

Since its first issue in April 2020, HAAL has gone from strength to strength. It is published twice per year, in May and November. As an open access and entirely online journal, HAAL reaches a wide audience. Between April 2020 and June 2024, the journal received more than 100,000 visits and the most-read article was visited some 12,575 times. The journal is present in five internationally-recognised indexes, catalogues and directories, including Scopus and Latindex. In fact, HAAL achieved indexation in Scopus after its fifth edition, which is remarkably early for a new academic journal and a clear mark of the quality and significance of its contributions.

The editors of HAAL are extremely grateful and heartened by the warm reception the journal has received from the academic community. Colleagues have contributed actively and generously by submitting articles and book reviews, participating in the vital work of peer review, as well as promoting the journal and celebrating its accomplishments. The journal is also supported by the recently established Latin American Association of Rural History (ALAHR). We would like to see the journal continue to grow and establish itself for the long term. This will take time and commitment, but it will also require financial support. HAAL does not use commercial advertising or subscription-based access and it charges no fees to its contributors. We rely on CEHAL members’ contributions and donations from academic institutions and the general public. The funds we raise support the computing resources, programming talent, and staff that keep HAAL going as an internationally recognised and intellectually rigorous journal that brings researchers together and makes significant contributions to the field of history.
